Conditions Treated

The following conditions respond significantly to self-healing techniques. Some respond more than others and most respond best in conjunction with external treatments.

  • Anxiety Disorders (includes OCD, PTSD, Social Anxiety, Phobias): self-healing techniques are usually required for a long-term response and can be used for the sole treatment.
  • Depression: self-healing techniques significantly augment medications and can reduce the amount of medications required. In mild or moderate cases they can be used as the sole treatment.
  • Addiction: self-healing techniques and mind-body skills can play an important role in changing the internal processes that drive addictive behaviors. They can reduce withdrawal symptoms, stop cravings, and protect against relapse.
  • Eating Disorders: eating disorders are strongly associated with dysregulation in the neuroendocrine system. Self-healing techniques and mind-body strategies can restore harmony in the neuroendocrine system more precisely than medications.
  • Headaches:
    • Tension headaches: self-healing techniques can be very effective if used preventatively and have some effect after a headache occurs.
    • Vascular headaches (Migraine/Cluster): self-healing techniques can reduce the frequency if used preventatively. This reduces the need for medication and the phenomenon of rebound headaches.
    • Mixed tension and vascular headaches: most people with chronic headaches have a mixture of tension and vascular causes of headache which reinforce each other. Self-healing techniques can reduce this reinforcement so that one type of headache does not lead to the other.
  • GI disorders:
    • IBS: self-healing techniques that involve imagery or self-hypnosis can relieve symptoms significantly, but may not do so completely.
    • Ulcers: self-healing techniques are not directly effective for these. They can help indirectly by reducing the effect of contributory factors.
    • Chron's disease/Ulcerative colitis: self-healing techniques can provide significant symptomatic relief, but may have limited effect on the disease process.
    • Functional abdominal pain: since medication options rarely work well, self-healing techniques are usually required for relief.
  • Diabetes: self-healing techniques can make it easier to adhere to the lifestyle changes required to control diabetes. They can also reduce stress which can help reduce swings in blood glucose levels.
  • Cancer: self-healing techniques can significantly reduce the side effects of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. They can also reduce the emotional distress associated with having such a serious condition.
  • Skin conditions: imagery and self-hypnotic techniques can provide significant relief from symptoms and, in the case of warts, can be effective as a sole treatment.
  • Asthma: self-healing techniques reduce the intensity and frequency of attacks especially when used in conjunction with medications.
  • Disordered eating/Obesity: self-healing techniques are usually required for relief as medications have limited effectiveness in treating these conditions. These conditions are extremely complex and often require extensive practice before one finds effective techniques.
  • Chronic Pain: self-healing techniques can reduce the perception of pain and the effect that pain has on living life. Self-healing techniques are very important in reducing the need for pain medications.
  • Stress: self-healing techniques can reduce or prevent the effects of chronic stress. They also help us function effectively under pressure without feeling strain.
  • Enhanced Performance: many of the self-healing techniques I use come from my martial arts training. As such they can be applied to increasing physical and mental performance. They are especially useful for staying calm and alert under pressure.
  • Relationships: self-healing techniques can be applied to a relationship. In this case one or both partners uses the self-healing techniques in the context of the relationship. This reduces tension and enhances communication and peaceful problem-solving.
