For Health Care Providers

My Practice Orientation - Behavioral Medicine

My focus is on using the relationships between the psyche, the nervous system, and the endocrine system (psychoneuroendocrinology) to increase the patient's self-healing processes. I also prescribe medications to augment these self-healing processes. This orientation is sometimes called behavioral medicine, though that is somewhat inaccurate as mental activity as well as behavior is addressed.

A major goal in behavioral medicine is to teach the patient how to activate or increase their body's capacity for self-healing. For a list of conditions which respond to self-healing techniques please see conditions treated. For an idea of what a behavioral medicince appointment is like please see treatment description.

For physicians

Behavioral medicine interventions are designed to augment, not replace, medications and procedures. A large number of studies demonstrate improved patient outcomes and reduced costs of care when behavioral medical interventions are added to standard medical care.

I will communicate with you regarding medications that I am prescribing as well as the techniques I am asking the patient to practice. If a patient has been on a stable dose of medications for several months, then I will often ask their primary care provider to take over prescribing those medications so that I free up space in my practice for those patients who are not stable.

For therapists

The self-healing techniques usually increase the patient's ability to modulate their emotional state and reduce anxiety or depression. They are rarely a substitute for psychotherapy, but they can be integrated with psychotherapy to improve its speed and effectiveness.

I will communicate with you to inform you of what skills I am asking patient to develop. It will also help me to hear from you about what you are working on with the patient.
