What is Self-Healing?

Each of us has the ability to heal ourselves. In fact, we are healing ourselves constantly in many ways that we are not aware of. Our body has an inner wisdom that handles these extremely complex tasks automatically. Even if we are sick, these self-healing processes are still active. My goal is to teach my patients to augment their self-healing abilities.

The traditional medical approach is to give you something to make you better. This can be medication, a surgical procedure, acupuncture, chiropractic treatment, herbs, etc. In the traditional approach the source of healing is outside of you and is delivered by the practitioner.

The self-healing perspective is that the main source of healing is within you and as you develop your self-healing abilities you will naturally improve.

Perhaps the best example of a self-healing technique is brushing your teeth. You body has a number of processes which it is constantly using to repair your teeth. Cavities occur when decay is faster than the repair. By brushing your teeth frequently you augment the repair processes and inhibit the decay processes so your teeth stay healthier.

Most self-healing techniques are that simple. The tasks are to find which techniques are most effective for you, and then figure out how to make those habits.

My Approach to Self-Healing

First, I have observed that self-healing techniques AND external sources of healing can be a powerful combination, more effective than either alone. So, I use medications with most of my patients, and refer them to other practictioners for treatments I cannot provide.

Second, learing is powerful, but learning to learn is even more powerful. Patients who learn specifc self-care techniques benefit, and they get even more benefit when they learn enough to create their own self-healing techniques. I frequently have patients who have been able to apply what they learned to alleviate one condition, say headaches, to another condition, say neck pain.

Third, self-healing techniques are not miraculous. They work because they evoke physiologic changes in the body that benefit health. Since they are natural techniques they have their limitations just like all other natural techniques. When we recognize their limitations we use them without blaming ourselves if the results are less than what we would like.
